Common Questions
Is white gold the same as platinum?
They appear almost identical. They look nearly identical fresh from the jeweller — but they are fundamentally different metals. White gold is yellow gold with alloys, coated in rhodium. Platinum is its own element — naturally white, denser, 95% pure in jewellery form, and naturally hypoallergenic. Over time, platinum develops a soft satiny patina; white gold gradually warms unless re-plated. For most buyers, white gold is the considered choice. For a truly lifetime piece with no maintenance, platinum is the more complete answer.
Why do we use 18k Gold?
You might assume 24K is the superior choice — more gold, more value. Not quite. 24K is too soft for a ring worn every day. 18K gold is 75% pure gold mixed with strengthening alloys — rich enough in colour to look unmistakably gold, pure enough to be gentle on sensitive skin, and hard enough to hold a diamond securely for a lifetime. If jewellery has ever left a green mark on your finger, it is the alloy content reacting with your skin — a problem that 18K yellow gold largely eliminates.
Which metal suits which skin tone?
The best fitting metal depends on your undertone, not your depth of colour. Fair skin with peachy, golden, or warm beige undertones pairs beautifully with yellow gold as it creates a soft, luminous contrast that feels natural. To check, look at the inside of your wrist: if your veins appear more green than blue, you carry warm undertones and yellow gold will suit you. Bluish or purple veins suggest cool undertones, where white gold or platinum may be more flattering. Rose gold is the versatile "neutral" of the group, typically looking stunning on all skin types — though it particularly complements those with olive or neutral undertones.
Which metal is best for sensitive skin?
In most cases yellow gold is the safest gold option for sensitive skin. High-karat yellow gold — 18K or above — contains very little nickel or other common allergens. If you have had reactions to white gold or fashion jewellery in the past, 18K yellow gold often resolves the issue entirely. Platinum is usually 90–95% pure, making it an excellent, albeit pricier, hypoallergenic option.
Does white gold or platinum make my diamond look better?
Yes, and this is one of the main reasons white gold dominates engagement ring sales. The neutral, cool-toned surface reflects light into the diamond without introducing any warm colour. This makes stones appear whiter and more brilliant.
18K Yellow Gold
Yellow Gold is the most popular metal choice, and is the only metal on Earth with a true golden color. Perfect for those who want a blend of vintage and modern.

The 4 C's: Our Curated Foundation
To ensure your ring radiates unmatched brilliance, we select diamonds based on the rigorous standards of Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. We prioritize an Ideal Cut above all else, as it defines the diamond's "fire," while our strict color and clarity requirements ensure a stone that is both visually pure and breathtakingly bright.
Our "At Least" Promise
We want you to have the perfect stone. When you choose a quality tier, these specifications represent the "At Least" minimum - your guaranteed floor for quality.
If our gemologists find that a diamond at your selected grade doesn't meet our internal beauty standards, we will source a superior stone for you at no additional cost. You pay for your chosen tier, and if we can't find the perfect match, you get a premium upgrade on us.
What Are The 4 Cs?
The 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity, and carat) are the global standards for grading diamond quality. Together, they determine a diamond's finished beauty and market value.
Which Of The 4 Cs Is Most Important?
Cut. A diamond's cut determines whether it achieves genuine brilliance or simply occupies space in a setting. A flawlessly colourless, perfectly clear stone with a poor cut will look flat and lifeless. The same stone cut to Ideal or Excellent grade will stop people in a room. At Bonded Matter, we never compromise on cut. It is the one C that is entirely within human control and the one that defines whether a diamond is beautiful or merely certified.
What Does "Color" Refer To In A Diamond?
In diamonds, colour refers to the absence of colour. The GIA scale runs from D (completely colourless, the rarest) to Z (visibly warm yellow). Adjacent grades are virtually indistinguishable when a diamond is set and viewed face-up under ambient light.
What Is "Clarity"?
Clarity grades the presence, size, and position of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface marks (blemishes). The GIA scale runs from Flawless - no inclusions visible under 10× magnification - down to Included, where inclusions are visible to the naked eye. Our minimum across both quality tiers is VS2 or above: a grade at which inclusions are not visible to the unaided eye under any normal viewing condition.
How Does "Carat" Affect The Ring?
Carat is a unit of weight - one carat equals 0.2 grams - and it affects both the size and the price of a diamond. However, carat weight does not translate directly into visible size. The cut of a diamond determines how its weight distributes across the table: a well-cut 0.9 ct stone will often appear larger face-up than a poorly-cut 1.0 ct stone.

Sizing Tips
What If I Want To Surprise Someone And Don't Know Their Size?
The most reliable covert methods, in order of accuracy: borrow a ring they wear on their ring finger and measure the internal diameter with a ruler or take it to a jeweller; trace the inside of a well-fitting ring onto paper - the diameter of that circle corresponds directly to a ring size; or ask a close friend or family member who may know, or who can find out without giving the surprise away. If none of these are possible, order in a size M (AU) / 6 (US) - the most statistically common adult female ring finger size - and plan to resize after the proposal. We keep our resize process as smooth as possible precisely because surprise proposals happen.
Does Band Width Affect Which Size I Should Order?
Yes - meaningfully. A wider band has more contact surface with the finger, which creates more friction and makes the ring feel tighter than a narrow band of the same nominal size. As a rule: bands up to 3mm - order your standard measured size; bands 3-5mm - consider sizing up by half; bands 5mm and above - size up by a full size.
How Does Temperature Affect Ring Size?
Fingers expand in warmth and contract in cold: the variation can be up to a full size for people with significant circulatory sensitivity. If you notice consistent seasonal variation in how your rings fit, we recommend:
- Measuring your finger at its largest (warm conditions, end of day) to establish your maximum size
- Choosing a classic fit if your ring will be worn through temperature extremes
Does The Hand Matter?
The dominant hand is usually half a size larger than the non-dominant hand. Measure the specific finger the ring will be worn on - not a different finger on the other hand.
What If I Am Between 2 Sizes?
Size up - with one caveat. If the ring has a straight band profile and no complex setting geometry, a half-size up is the more comfortable and more practical choice: it slides over the knuckle easily, and a very small adjustment can bring it back to perfect fit. A ring that is half a size too small, by contrast, may not pass the knuckle without effort and often becomes uncomfortable in warmth or after activity.
The exception is rings with wide bands, where sizing up by a full size rather than half may be more appropriate, as wider bands create additional friction against the finger.
